Ahhh, I remember that time well. Even up to the week bofree I gave birth (at that point already one week past my due date) I was browsing the bookstore shelves looking for inspiring guides to a natural, happy childbirth. The most important thing I tried to remember was that women have been doing this for centuries and mostly without the marvels of modern medicine, just good old-fashioned Mother Nature and instinct. And with this mentality, and the support of my awesome husband and amazing sister, I have successfully delivered two beautiful daughters, both completely naturally with no drugs, though we did elect for a hospital setting just in case. First was 18 hours of deep yoga breathing (in with all the positive thoughts, out with all the negative thoughts) and position-changing, walking, self-doubt, dr breaking my water which slowed my labor, sleeping (!) in between contractions, complete back labor since she was facing the wrong direction (and returned to that position even after the dr turned her) and 1 1/2 hours of pushing, fighting the darn exterior baby monitors but NOT ONCE uttering more than a moan. Second was 6 hours of total labor, my water breaking right after we got to the hospital, nurse saying 8 cm me saying, I’m pushing! and her frantically calling for a doctor any doctor! to get in that room. Both times I delivered on my side. Both girls were 8 lbs 8 oz. And both deliveries were the most amazing, empowering experiences I have had the privilege to have. Keep an open mind, trust yourself and your body, and when it gets bad, just know that every breath is bringing you closer to your beautiful child. Enjoy! by July 15, 2011 at 5:47 pm
